چکیده

We analyze simultaneous ascending bid auctions with multiple objects in which bidders can be budget constrained. The presence of budget constraints shrinks the equilibrium set. A family of equilibria with a high degree of competition, as well as a family of equilibria with a high degree of collusion, disappear. When the budget available to each bidder is private information then even a very small probability of having a budget constrained bidder may have a strong impact on th eequilibrium set, eliminating the most competitive equilibria. A comparison of multi-object auction formats

We compare the performance of three alternative multi-object auction institutions: simultaneous ascending auctions with the hard closing rule, simultaneous ascending auctions with the soft closing rule, and simultaneous first price sealed bid auctions. Among the three formats, the simultaneous ascending auction with the soft closing rule is the most efficient and produces outcomes closest to th...

Collusion via Signaling in Simultaneous Ascending Bid Auctions with Heterogeneous Objects, with and without Complementarities∗

Collusive equilibria exist in simultaneous ascending bid auctions with multiple objects, even with large complementarities in the buyers’ utility functions. The bidders collude by dividing the objects among themselves, while keeping the prices low. In the most collusive equilibrium the complementarities are never realized. The scope for collusion however narrows as the ratio between the number ...

Low Price Equilibrium in Multi–Unit Auctions: The GSM Spectrum Auction in Germany1

The second–generation (GSM) spectrum auction in Germany is probably the most clear cut example of a low price outcome in a simultaneous ascending–bid multi–unit auction. The present paper gives an account of the events, describes the auction rules and market conditions, and provides a game theoretic explanation of low price equilibrium in simultaneous, ascending–bid multi–unit auctions. In part...

The Over-Concentrating Nature of Simultaneous Ascending Auctions

This paper analyzes simultaneous ascending auctions of two different items, viewed as complements by multi-item bidders. The finding is that such auctions overly concentrate the goods to a multi-item bidder and never overly diffuse them to single-item bidders. The main reason is that some bidders strictly want to jump-bid and jumpbidding allows the game to mimic a package auction, where single-...
